Making It Legal

No way around it other than keep things unofficial ... all U.S. states require that couples obtain a marriage license before his wedding vows mean nothing in the eyes of the government. Frankly, the application for a marriage license is one of the most boring in the wedding bridesmaid dresses planning to-do list, but since it is vital as I feel that must be addressed here for the sake of completeness. Although I wish it were as participation as sampling wedding cake or buy a wedding dress, simply is not. In contrast, the other a quick trip to the county clerk's office should not be stressful or too much of a pain in the ass if you're prepared.

Obviously, each state has its individual rules applying for a marriage license is concerned, so I will not try to cover all data from the evening dress states here. To do this, you should call the clerk's office and I'd say about 99% of the sources I've found to get information from the state by state marriage license has been out of date or just plain wrong. The following is a rough guide for those just starting to think about applying for a marriage license.

Who, what, where?
You and your husband-to-be will proceed to the county clerk or secretary of the office of the court together, hopefully with all the proper documentation. At a minimum, you will need some form of identification, usually a driver's license, birth certificate, military ID or passport, but state requirements vary. Non-citizens may have to submit more than one form of identification. There will be an application fee, and some county officials still only accept cash, money orders or personal prom dresses. Oh, and you want to know three things: your social security number (for all adults who really should have memorized), wedding date, and where you are contemplating marriage.
